ARP main cap studs will hold the crank securely.

It is worth mentioning at this point that a cast-iron engine block will have a certain amount of flex at high rpms. Excessive flex of the block and crank will cause undue wear of the main bearings, so improving rigidity is worth considering. However, there are pros and cons involved with any treatment of the main caps and different engine builders will have different opinions on what is best. There are many race-engine builders who will simply use the original cast main caps without experiencing any issues. Most issues will likely occur through over-revs and aggressive downshifts causing the crank to whip. A good driver with smooth control of the engine should not experience these issues. If you do use the original main caps, using a high-quality washer is recommended, such as those available from ARP, or better yet a set of ARP main studs.

The next most basic attempt to stiffen the block is with a centre main strap. This is quite simply a machined block of steel that is strapped to the top of the centre main cap with longer bolts to hold it all together. The top of the centre main cap needs to be machined flat and to do the job properly the centre journal line must be honed with the strap in place, as the addition of the strap can distort the journal ever so slightly.
